Although I knew that I ought to seek a livelihood to relieve mother of hard work and distress, I still aspired to go on with study. So I kept learning secretly. I had no courage to tell mother about the idea until admitted to a normal school which provided free uniforms, books, room and board. To enter the school, I had to pay ten Yuan as a deposit. This was a large sum of money for my family. However, after two weeks tough effort, mother managed to raise the money and sent me off to school in tears afterwards. She would spare no pains for her son to win a bright future. On the day when I was appointed the schoolmaster after graduation, mother and I spent a sleepless night. I said to her, you can have a rest in the future. but she replied nothing, only with tears streaming down her face.2英译汉 The physical distance between speakers can indicate a number of things and can also be used to consciously sendmessagesaboutintent. Closeness, for example, indicates intimacy or threat to many speakers whilst distance maydenote formality or a lack of interest. Proximity is also both a matter of personal style and is often culture-bound so that what may seem normal to a speaker from one culture may appear unnecessarilyclose or distant to a speaker from another. And, standing close to someone may be quite appropriate in some situations such as informal party, but completely out of place in others, such as meeting with a superior. Posture can convey meaning too. Hunched shoulders and a hanging head give a powerful indication of mood. A lowered head when speaking to a superior (with or without eye contact) can convey the appropriate relationship in some cultures. Holdinthehandandg、azeatit,thedarkredcolorisreminiscentoftheblood,whichistheimpressoflife.Takeasipofitandappreciatethetaste,thebittersweetflavorisexactlythesamewithlife, whichiscomplicatedandblurred.Oncethesipisswallowed,thelingeringfragrancepleasestheheartandrefreshesthemind,leavingapersonlifelongbenefit.Thereisarema、rkableresemblancebetweenlifeandwine:thetastebecomesmoredeliciousasthewinemellows,justaslifegetsbetterasitbecomesmoreabundant.Whenlifecomestotwilightyears,itlookscalmandtastesfullofwisdomandgenerosity,justlikeabottleofwinetobesavored.2英译汉The UN General Assembly, the central political forum, is compos

How I Turned to Be Optimistic

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

Last week, when we learned the new word "slovenly", we asked to make a sentence with it. I volunteered to do it by saying "My deskmate is a slovenly girl who clothes never fit her." Hearing this, a whole class burst into laughter and my deskmate face turned red. After class, I learned up from the teacher that my deskmate would have dropped out of school if she hadn′ t been helped with others. My mindless words must have hurt him deeply. Not until then do I realize words could be powerfully in both positive and negative ways. We should avoid hurt others if our words are not encouraging.

Practice 1 Directions: Read the texts from a newspaper article in which five people talk about where they played when they were children. For questions 1 to 5, match the name of each people (1 to 5) to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Peter: My favorite childhood play area was the back garden. Back in the days when I was growing up on a large housing estate, the ‘goals’ would be a pair of garage doors or two jackets laid out in the garden. I would spend hours kicking a ball about with my dad, learning how to control, dribble or kick it. Simon: The playground was quite small The floor was covered with flat bricks and there were many that were cracked or broken or missing, and a few weeds struggled through. It was totally enclosed on one side by the school and on the other by high brick walls. It was more like a prison yard--on top of the walls was a layer of concrete into which pieces of broken glass had been stuck. After school was finished my friends and I would climb a lamppost outside the school and sit on top of the wall, slowly breaking off the bits of glass. Alan: I come from an area of terraced houses, pavements and streets. There were no gardens. My first school was Prince’s Street Primary and the room in which I received my first lessons had large, folding glass doors that opened onto a small playground that had grass, bushes and flowers. My amazement at seeing these items, which are normal to most of the world, has stayed with me all my life. Nick: I was strictly forbidden from the obvious playground--a long, overgrown ditch running through waste ground, mainly built to take away the rain. It was irresistible to us local schoolchildren. Its charm, compared with the surrounding tennis courts, football pitches and farmland, was purely because it was out of bounds. That area was truly where I grew up, more than in the rest of the little town’s correct and neat suburbia, where my house was. Julle: Unitl I was twelve I was brought up on airforce camps and each camp had a small playground in the middle of the houses. It was always a great meeting place and I remember sitting with my friends on the swings many evenings until dark. You would often go out and swing for hours until someone else came out. I always liked swinging. Now match each of the people (1 to 5) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. 作者写到“After school was finished my friends and I would climb a lamppost outside the school and sit on top of the wall, slowly breaking off the bits of glass. ”所以操场是不安全的。再对照七个选项,也只有F项与文意相符。 3.D 文章先说了自己住的地方很拥挤,没有花园。然后写到自己的小学、小学教室外面的小操场,后面又说“My amazement at seeing these items…has stayed with me all my life”,意思就是说自己的童年是在教室周围度过的,故选D。 5.C 最后一段文章最后一句说“I always liked swinging”,意思就是说作者喜欢“the feeling of flying”,故选C。

After barely graduating from high school , I started out at a local community college.Ireceived an associate degree in business administration , and never once sought specialhelp.I transferred to a small liberal arts college to finish up my bachelor of science degree, and spent an extra year to complete a second degree. Then I started a job as a softwareengineer for an Internet-based company.I have been using computers for 17 years andhave learned everything I needed to know on my own.3 To find out my KS diagnosis. I had gone to my general physician for a physicalexamination. He noticed that my testes(睾丸)were smaller than they should be and sentme for blood work. The karyotype(染色体组型)showed KS, 47, XXY. After seeingthe symptoms of KS and what effects they might have,I found it described me perlectly. But,after getting over the initial shock and dealing with the denial, depression, andanger,I decided that there could be things much worse in life,I decided to take a positiveapproach.4 There are several types of treatments for KS. I give myself a testosterone(睾丸素)injection once every two weeks. My learning and thought processes have become stronger, and I take greater pleasure in meeting other people and have become more of a leader. Granted, not all of this is due to the increased testosterone level, some of it is from a newconfidence level and from maturing.5 I feel that parents who are finding out prior to the birth of their son that he will have KSare very lucky. There is so much they can do to help their child have a great life.I havehad almost all of the symptoms at some time in my life, and I've gotten through and donewell. The writer used to be pretty________.A:a great lifeB:relieved and happyC:a life of frustrationsD:a good-for-nothingE:shocked and depressedF:shy and reserved答案:F解析:
