Why should we teach pronunciation and intonation in context?

The same words said with different rhythm and intonation will produce different meanings depending on the speaker’s attitude and intention. Practicing the pronunciation of individual sounds in isolation is sometimes necessary, but not sufficient in developing students’ phonological competence.
