Practice 2 You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The diagram below shows how potato chips are made. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

正确答案: 【参考范文】
The diagram demonstrates the process of converting potatoes into potato chips.
First of all, when a batch of potatoes arrives at the manufacturing plant, they are examined by hand for quality before being washed in cold water. The potatoes are then sent to a peeling machine to remove their skins and eliminate potato peels and starch. Then, the peeled potatoes are transported to a bucket conveyor, which moves them one by one into a slicing machine, after which the slices are distributed on another conveyor belt and air dried as they move along into the deep fryer. The chips are then cooked in the deep fryer and, after the completion of this process, they are salted and transported by a fiat belt conveyor to the bag packer machine, which feeds chips into each bag. Alternatively, if the chips are to be packaged in a can, a different machine is used.
In summary, potatoes are washed, peeled, sliced and fried in order to produce potato chips.

【听力原文】
M: Hi, Sarah, what’s up?
W: Oh, hi. I just got out of a history class. I had to give a presentation.
M: How did it go?
W: Terribly. I’m sure I made a fool of myself.
M: why? Weren’t you prepared?
W: No, it’s not that. [1] I just get so embarrassed and nervous whenever I’ve to speak in front of a group of people. I stand up and my face gets red and then I get even more nervous because I know everybody can see me blushing.
M: It’s not so bad to blush.
W: But it happens all the time. If the professor asks a question and I know the answer, I’ll blush like crazy if he calls on me. Doesn’t that ever happen to you?
M: No, not really. [2] Maybe you should forget about the people. Look at something else in the room, like the exit sign.
W: I guess I could try that. But I doubt it will help.
M: You know we talked about this in psychology class. Blushing, even though it is involuntary, is more or less a learned behavior.
W: What do you mean?
M: [3] Oh, children hardly ever blush at all. And, among adults, supposedly women blush more than men.
W: I wonder why.
M: I don’t know why either. [4] Why don’t you use me as your audience when you’ve got an oral presentation in class next time?
W: Good idea. Thank you. Well, I’ve got to get going for my next class. I’ll talk to you later.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
1. What was the woman’s problem?
2. Why might looking at the exit sign help the woman?
3. What does the man say about children?
4. What does the man suggest the woman do?

Practice 7 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

正确答案: 【参考范文】
Since feminist movement sprang up in the 1960s from North America and Europe, the social status of women has improved a lot globally. And the question of whether both genders should be treated equally is still a heat topic in various fields, of which a specific issue is: Should schools and universities balance the number of male and female students in every subject? Personally, I do not agree with this viewpoint.
Generally speaking, the term feminism can be used to describe a school of thought in circles such as politics, culture or economy emphasizing establishing equal rights and legal protections for women. Feminism has driven many subjects like political, cultural philosophical and sociological theories. It also refers to a movement in favor of gender equality and fight for women's rights and interests.
The real meaning of feminism, however, is often distorted and misunderstood. Absorbing equal number of male students and female students in every subject is not a genuine reflection of gender equality, as it imposes different subjects on both genders indiscriminately without considering the unique properties of each sex. The result would be nothing more than symbolic. In other words, equality is not illustrated by cold numbers, but genuine respect for women. It is undeniable that gender balance in every subject brings some benefits to women, allowing them to work with male classmates, to develop their abilities physically and psychologically, and to cultivate interpersonal relations.
All in all, universities decision makers should weight the requiring trait of a subject and evaluate the characteristics of each gender, and then assign appropriate quota. And the government should prudently reconsider the issue of gender equality and better the situation in real sense.

Daily communication tools make the distance between people shrink. There are various ways such as mobile phones, Facebook, Twitter and E-mail which changes our life from daily life to work style. As for the dramatic and rapid changes, people in all walks of life hold different opinions. Personally, it is a must to be tolerant of the new technological innovations.
It is undeniable that all these high-tech tools can alienate the virtual interpersonal relationship that exists between people. If we want to tell somebody something, we do not have to really see him, and we can send a short message, a E-mail, or leave one on Facebook. Regardless of the convenience, face-to-face conversations are still one of the best ways to understand each other.
High technologies provide us with more choices which can yield higher efficiency, which can be illustrated from three perspectives. Firstly, it is a useful time-saver for people greatly enjoy social life. Social network enable them to spare the trouble of heavy traffic in rush hours when they need to have contact with friends. Secondly, it is also a money-saver. Compared with the high cost of an official visit to someone or some place, chatting on-site or through telephone is much cheaper. If each company has an E-conference system, information sharing should never be a daydream in the era of information. Lastly, and most importantly, with the great help of new inventions, people may communicate with others without being limited to geographical difference. Namely, no matter where one stays, he or she can get in touch with people on the Internet at any time.
In summary, modem technologies are excellent assistants of our life and work, so it is wise to accept them and make full use of them properly.

Then, the waste is put into this plastic container, such as food, grass and newspapers when food and grass take 15cm each. The three bar charts illustrate a survey of the consuming habit in music albums in Britain by sex and age group.
At first glance, we can notice that classical music is far less popular than pop or rock music. Compared to 17% of women, the rock market is mainly consumed by men with 30% buying rock. It is obvious that, according to the graphs, male buyers are more than female buyers in all types of music. We can also see that the pop music CD buyers are people from age 16 to 34 who take the highest percentage, followed by the male buyers with slightly under 30%. We see from the graph number one that need in pop music is steady from age 16 to 44 with 20% of the population continuing to buy pop CDs after 45 years old. For the classic music, however, the most active consuming, at 20%, is by people older than 45, and 25-34 age group takes the next place at 16% approximately.

Q: What do you think of the unemployment problem in China?
A: I think the unemployment problem is getting increasingly serious now. China is a country with a large population and there have always been surplus labors, Although not a big problem in the past under the planned economy system, but now enterprises could not handle the burden of a surplus labor force and many workers in state-owned enterprises are out of job.
