Officials there are trying to figure out what caused the worst U. S. mining disaster in 25 years. It happened Monday afternoon at the Upper Big Branch South Mine: a massive blast inside the coal mine that killed at least 25 people, left 4 others trapped. Rescue workers are trying to drill their way into the mine, but they need to get 1,200 feet down inside of it’ and that could take a while. Not only is this process slow, it’s dangerous. Crews are having to deal with potentially harmful gases. President Obama and other officials, including both of West Virginia’s U. S. senators, have offered their thoughts and prayers to the families of the miners. They’ve also said they’re determined to find out what happened and how it can be prevented in the future. One government official said, “Miners should never have to sacrifice their fives for their livelihood.” This all happened inside a facility that does what’s called longwall mining.

There was a small piece of vacant land behind our house. Mother said, “It is a kind of waste to leave it untilled. Since you like peanuts so much, why not till it and plant some peanuts?” We children and servant girls were all pleased at the idea. And some of us bought seeds, others prepared the land and still others watered it. In a few months, we actually had a harvest!
Mother said, “How about giving a feast this evening to celebrate the harvest and invite your Daddy to have a taste of our newly-harvested peanuts?” We all agreed. Mother made several peanuts-based dishes, and told us that the feast would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot.

Stock markets in Europe and the United States have fallen sharply in response to further signs that the debt crisis in Greece is intensifying and could spread to other countries. Share prices in New York, London, Frankfurt and Paris fell by more than 2% after a major international credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded Greek debt to a level known informally as junk.
Standard & Poor’s downgraded its assessment of Greek bonds to the so-called junk status because of the growing danger that the bond holders will not be paid back in full. Many big investment funds have rules that forbid them from holding junk bonds, says the move is likely to trigger a further round of selling. Share markets have taken fright, fearing that if Greece does default on its debts, it would hit many European banks which hold Greek bonds and could trigger a wider financial crisis. Already pressure is mounting on Portugal which has also seen its credit rating downgraded today, although it remains above junk status.
