U. S. Blacks Hard-hit by Cancer

Death rates for cancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more
likely to die of cancer than whites, the American Cancer Society said Monday.
In a special report on cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually
diagnosed with cancer later than whites, and they are more likely to die of the disease.
This could be because of unequal(不平等的)access to medical care, because blacks
are more likely to have other diseases as well, and perhaps because of differences in the
biology(生物学)of the cancer itself, the report added.
"In general, black Americans have less hope of surviving five years after diagnosis
than whites for all cancer sites and all stages of diagnosis,"the report said,
"In describing cancer statistics for black Americans, this report recognizes that many of
the differences associated with race may be caused by unfair social and economic
differences and unequal access to medical care."
The cancer society said blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups(体格检查)
earlier, when cancer is more treatable, and it said more research is needed to see if
biological differences play a role.
"The new statistics emphasize the continuing importance of wiping out these unfair
social differences through public policy and education efforts,"the organization said in a
statement.
But it also noted a drop in cancer death rates.
"Cancer death rates in both sexes for all sites combined have dropped greatly among
black Americans since 1992,as have incidence rates(发生率),"said the report.

Black Americans are more likely to die of cancer than
A:people in other countries.
B:white Americans.
C:all other Americans.
D:their ancestors.

Infection of AIDS

According to a report of the World Health Organization, this year will see 2.6 million deaths from AIDS,the highest yearly international total since the disease began to take hold in the late 1970s, despite questionable antiretro-viral drugs(抗逆转录酶病毒药)that staved off AIDS deaths in the richer countries.
As things stood, the number of deaths was likely to increase for many years before peaking. The report said about half of all people who acquired HIV become infected before they turned 25 and usually died before their 35th birthdays of AIDS,which destroys the body's immune methods.
Although ninety-five percent of people with HIV live in the developing world, battling HIV rates was still a challenge in the developed countries of the West, where there are"very worrying facts" that safe sex practices are dropping among gays.
While AIDS deaths in the United States dropped by 42 percent between 1996 and 1997,the figure dropped by only half that between 1997 and last year.
The report added that in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the number of infected people had risen by a third this year,to 360,000.
This was mainly due to an increase in the use of infected needles to inject drugs in Russia and the Ukraine. More than 2,700 cases of HIV were reported in Moscow in the fitst nine months of this year.
Although cases of HIV remain relatively low in the Middle East, increasing use of injected drugs accounted for two thirds of new HIV cases in Bahrian last year, half in Iran and more than a third in Tunisia.

According to the passage above, which of the following statements is not true?
A:The number of people infected with HIV is increasing.
B:Some new drugs can help delay AIDS deaths in countries where AIDS cases are found.
C:There are more people who died of AIDS worldwide this year than any other year in the past.
D:Most people with HIV live in the developing world.

第8题:

Shoe Co, a shoe manufacturer, has developed a new product called the ‘Smart Shoe’ for children, which has a built-in tracking device. The shoes are expected to have a life cycle of two years, at which point Shoe Co hopes to introduce a new type of Smart Shoe with even more advanced technology. Shoe Co plans to use life cycle costing to work out the total production cost of the Smart Shoe and the total estimated profit for the two-year period.

Shoe Co has spent $5·6m developing the Smart Shoe. The time spent on this development meant that the company missed out on the opportunity of earning an estimated $800,000 contribution from the sale of another product.

The company has applied for and been granted a ten-year patent for the technology, although it must be renewed each year at a cost of $200,000. The costs of the patent application were $500,000, which included $20,000 for the salary costs of Shoe Co’s lawyer, who is a permanent employee of the company and was responsible for preparing the application.

The following information is also available for the next two years:

Shoe Co is still negotiating with marketing companies with regard to its advertising campaign, so is uncertain as to what the total marketing costs will be each year. However, the following information is available as regards the probabilities of the range of costs which are likely to be incurred:

Required:

Applying the principles of life cycle costing, calculate the total expected profit for Shoe Co for the two-year period.

Breast Cancer Deaths Record Low

The number of women dying from breast cancer has fallen to a record low by dropping under 12,000 a
year for the first time since records began.
The Cancer Research UK data showed that 11,990 women died in the UK in 2007.
The previous lowest figure had been recorded in 1 97 1一 the year records began一after which it rose
steadily year by year until the late 1980s.
Professor Peter Johnson,Cancer Research UK's chief clinician, said,"It's incredibly encouraging to see fewer
women dying from breast cancer now than at any time in the last 40 years, despite breast cancer being diagnosed
more often."
"Research has played a crucial role in this progress, leading to improved treatments and better management
for women with the disease."
" The introduction of the NHS(国民保健制度)breast screening program has also contributed as the
earlier cancer is diagnosed, women are more likely to survive."
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK with 45,500 women every year diagnosed with
the disease一a 50% rise in 25 years.
The number of deaths peaked in 1989,when 15,625 women died.It then fell by between 200 and 400
deaths each year until 2004.
There was a slight rise in 2005 and then two years of falls.
Dr. Sarah Cant, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said,"It is great news that fewer women
are dying from breast cancer and highlights the impact of improved treatments, breast screening and
awareness of the disease."
"However, there are still too many women affected and the incidence of the disease is increasing year by
year.,,
The rising rate of breast cancer diagnosis has been put down to a variety of factors including obesity
(肥胖)and alcohol consumption.

The rate of breast cancer diagnosis in the UK has been dropping.
A:Right
B:Wrong
C:Not mentioned

答案:B
解析:
在英国,2007年有11 990名女子死于乳腺癌。根据第二段中“The Cancer Research UK data showed that 11 ,990 women died in the UK in 2007”可知,2007年英国癌症研究中心的数据 显示,2007年美国妇女的死亡人数是11 990。
根据文章第三段中“The previous lowest figure had been recorded in 1971一the year records began...”
There was。slight rise in 2005"(2005年人数略微上升)可以推断,该论断是错误的。
最后一段中说obesity(肥胖)and alcohol consumption是诱发乳腺癌的原因,但未提及其 他疾病,因此选C0 put down to的意思是“归因于”。第3部分:概括大意与完成句子
