The Olympic Games (1)The Olympic Games should be traced back to the ancient times. The Greeks were very fond of all sports which could help build up the body. Once in four years they had a great festival to celebrate what they called the Olympian Games. Many thousands of people came together upon a wide plain to see the competitions among men and boys from all parts of Greece. The great games were running races, wrestling matches, horse races, and chariot races. In most of the games the men and boys wore little or no clothing, and had their bodies oiled. The prizes seemed very simple; they were nothing more than crowns made of leaves of the wild olive tree; but to wear one of these crowns was the greatest honor, and he went home covered with glory.
(2)Ancient athletes competed as individuals, not on national teams, as in the modern Games. The emphasis on individual athletic achievement through public competition was related to the Greek ideal of excellence. Through their outstanding words or deed, aristocratic men attained this ideal and won permanent glory and fame.
(3)Today, the Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world. Every four years, a hundred or more countries send their best layers to compete for the highest honors in sport. As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. Gold medals and glory are awarded to the winners. But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is in the spirit of the Olympics—to take part is what matters.
(4)The Olympic Games always start in a bright color and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The runner with the Olympic torch then enters the stadium and lights the flame. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display. The competitions begin the next day. Victory ceremonies take place after each contest. The first three winners in each receive medals and then mount a special victory stand. While the flags of the three countries represented are hoisted, the national anthem of the winning athlete’s homeland is played. At the closing ceremony, athletes again march into the stadium. It is declared by an Olympic official that the Games closed and the athletes are invited to the site of the next Olympics.

In the past one hundred years, the Beijing Normal University has grown and progressed along with the Chinese people’s struggle for national independence, prosperity and people’s well-being. The teachers and students of the University showed their lofty patriotism by actively taking part in various revolutionary campaigns against imperialism and feudalism including the May 4th Movement and the December 9th Movement. (2)The 21st century has been witnessing great progress of science and technology and intensified competition worldwide. The competition among nations, in the final analysis, boils down to competition of their human talents and their abilities to innovate. As the basis for nurturing human talents and increasing national innovativeness, education must be put at an important place in our overall strategy of the modernization program. Our strategy of revitalizing the country through science and education must be unswervingly carded out so that more qualified builders of socialism with Chinese characteristics, more innovative talents with high qualifies will be brought to the fore, with the view to steadily raising the moral, scientific and cultural levels of the nation as a whole. This is what the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation requires and also a historical task for education in the socialist period.
(3)Teachers play a significant role in implementing the education policy of the Party, promoting educational innovation and nurturing high-caliber talents. Therefore, in this golden age, a large contingent of high-minded, patriotic and devoted teachers are expected to serve the society. It is hoped that our teachers can impart knowledge, guide people and act as paragons of virtue and learning. It is also expected that our teachers can remain scrupulous and diligent in their scholarly pursuit and keep progressing with the times.

Kunqu Opera (1)Kunqu Opera is one of the oldest operas in China, and it is also one of the treasures of Chinese traditional culture and art. In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed Kunqu Opera as a masterpiece of “the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.”
(2)Kunqu Opera, also called Kunshanqiang, is said to be the mother of all Chinese operas. Its beginnings can be traced back to the late Yuan Dynasty in the lower Yangtze Valley. Among the earliest genres of drama, the traditional performing art was named for its birthplace, Kunshan, a place near the city of Suzhou, which is in today’s Jiangsu Province of East China. The development of Kunqu Opera went through several stages. In the early days, the songs were composed of long and short lines. The singer sang solo, and the orchestra came in at the end of each line. Only percussion instruments were used in the course. In the Ming Dynasty, Kunqu Opera was reformed by Wei Liangfu during the reign of Emperor Jiajing, and it became mild, smooth, and graceful. The performers attached great importance to clear recitation, correct singing, and pure tunes. Meanwhile, the composers wrote the musical scores after working out the tunes, and the songs were written in seven-character or ten-character lines. Moreover, three types of musical instruments formed the accompaniment, including stringed instruments, bamboo flutes, and drums and clappers. In addition, the jing and chou roles were no longer those exclusively portraying foolish, awkward, or stingy people.
(3)Kunqu Opera is acknowledged as an elegant opera in terms of music, recitation, and the performers’ movement. It is foremost acclaimed as “watermill song” because of its soft arias and the graceful movement of its performers. Carrying forward the tradition of ancient poetry and common speech, the art is also of very high literary value. Kunqu has its own distinctive tunes. The orchestra consists of traditional instruments, including the dizi, which is a horizontal bamboo flute which plays the lead part, the xiao, which is a vertical bamboo flute, the sheng, which is a mouth organ, and the pipa, a plucked string instrument with a fretted finger board. With the long-term development of performing operas, simultaneous singing and dancing becomes a feature of Kunqu Opera, especially illustrated by body movements. Body movements in Kunqu Opera can be categorized into two types. The first type is one including exaggerated postures when speaking and dancing movements which are developed from gestures that emphasize on telling stories. The other is lyrical dancing with lyrics which is to show the quality of characters and the meaning of operas. Many Chinese local operas are greatly influenced by its tunes and acting style.
(4)Kunqu Opera, which has been acknowledged as an elite opera, has suffered some of a decline since the eighteenth century because of its requirement of a high level of technical knowledge from the audience. Today, due to the competition from mass culture and a lack of interest amongst the young, Kunqu Opera is facing the risk of disappearance. Of the 400 arias regularly sung in opera performances in the mid-20th century, only a few dozen continue to be performed.
